Mineral Bath Salts Explained: Four Salts, Four Fascinating Stories

Dr Kez Chirolab Mineral Bath Salts Explained: Four Salts, Four Fascinating Stories

A salt is a salt, right?  Well, not quite!

When we think of salt, most of us picture the familiar white crystals sitting on the kitchen table.

But the natural world contains an extraordinary variety of mineral salts, each with its own chemical composition, geological history and distinctive characteristics.

Some formed as ancient seas gradually evaporated. Others are extracted from mineral-rich underground deposits or produced from naturally occurring brines.  While they might all find their way into a warm bath, they're certainly not all the same.

Let's explore four fascinating mineral ingredients: Epsom salts, magnesium chloride flakes, Dead Sea salt and Himalayan pink salt.

Dr Kez Chirolab What Exactly Is a Mineral Salt?

What Exactly Is a Mineral Salt?

In chemistry, a salt is a compound made up of positively and negatively charged ions.  That might sound a little technical, but it's an important distinction.

Ordinary table salt, for example, is sodium chloride, made up of sodium and chloride ions.

Epsom salts, despite their name, are something entirely different. They're magnesium sulphate.

Magnesium chloride flakes contain magnesium and chloride, while Dead Sea salt and Himalayan pink salt are mixtures or naturally occurring deposits with their own characteristic mineral profiles.

So although we often group these ingredients together as bath salts, their chemical compositions can be surprisingly different.  Those differences are part of what makes them so interesting.

Now, before the word chemical raises an eyebrow, here's something worth remembering.

Everything in nature is made of chemicals, including water, the air we breathe and the minerals found in the earth.

The word simply describes what something is made of. It doesn't tell us whether it's natural or manufactured, beneficial or harmful.

Sometimes, understanding the science behind nature makes it even more extraordinary!

Epsom Salts: A Discovery with English Roots

Magnesium sulphate

Our first ingredient has a rather unexpected history.

Epsom salts take their name from Epsom in Surrey, England, where mineral-rich spring waters became famous centuries ago.

The name has endured, even though the magnesium sulphate used in modern products may come from entirely different geographical sources.

Unlike ordinary table salt, Epsom salts are composed of magnesium and sulphate ions.

Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in numerous processes within the human body, including normal muscle and nerve function.

But beyond its biological importance, magnesium is also a fascinating part of the Earth's natural chemistry.

Our Epsom salts are sourced from Germany, where naturally derived magnesium sulphate is prepared for modern use.

Magnesium Chloride Flakes: A Legacy of an Ancient Sea

Magnesium chloride

Imagine a sea that existed hundreds of millions of years ago.  Over geological time, enormous changes to the Earth's surface caused some ancient marine waters to become isolated and concentrated.  As water evaporated and minerals accumulated, extensive underground salt deposits were formed.  Some of these ancient mineral formations remain preserved deep beneath the Earth's surface today.

Our magnesium chloride flakes originate from the Zechstein geological deposits beneath the Netherlands, associated with an ancient sea that existed approximately 250 million years ago.

Although magnesium chloride and magnesium sulphate both contain magnesium, they're different chemical compounds with different properties.  That's precisely why we think they deserve their own stories.

Dead Sea Salt: Minerals from an Extraordinary Landscape

A naturally occurring mixture of mineral salts

Few bodies of water are as famous for their mineral content as the Dead Sea.  Situated between Jordan and Israel and the West Bank, this remarkable salt lake lies within one of the lowest exposed land regions on Earth.  Its waters are exceptionally saline, containing a distinctive mixture of dissolved minerals.

Unlike ordinary sea salt, which is predominantly sodium chloride, Dead Sea salt products can contain substantial proportions of magnesium, potassium and calcium salts, depending on how they're produced.  The precise mineral profile varies according to the source, harvesting process and final product.

The Dead Sea has a long history of association with bathing and personal care traditions, making it one of the world's most recognisable mineral-rich environments and its chemistry is every bit as fascinating as its geography.

Himalayan Pink Salt: A Colourful Story Written in Stone

Predominantly sodium chloride with naturally occurring trace minerals

Of all the mineral salts, Himalayan pink salt might be the most visually distinctive.

Its beautiful shades range from delicate pale pink and soft rose to warmer peach, orange and deeper reddish tones, making it instantly recognisable.

But where does that colour come from?

Although Himalayan pink salt is primarily sodium chloride, just like ordinary table salt, it also contains small amounts of other naturally occurring minerals and elements. Iron-containing compounds are largely responsible for its distinctive colouring.

Our Himalayan pink salt is sourced from Pakistan, where ancient marine salt deposits have been preserved for millions of years.  These deposits tell an extraordinary geological story, shaped by ancient seas and the movement of the Earth's crust.

It's important to note, that while Himalayan pink salt is often celebrated for its trace minerals, the presence of a these minerals doesn't necessarily mean we absorb them all in nutritionally significant amounts, just by soaking for 20 minutes.

For us, however, knowing that we're immersing our body in natural minerals and botanicals, instead of artificial fragrances and chemicals, is what creating a Clean Slate soaking ritual is all about.

Dr Kez Chirolab Different Salts, Different Mineral Profiles

Different Salts, Different Mineral Profiles

One of the most interesting things about these four ingredients is how different their mineral compositions can be.

Dr Kez Chirolab Mineral analysis

An important distinction: These are elements and constituents reported in scientific analyses of Dead Sea waters, selected Dead Sea salt samples or Himalayan pink salts. Their presence and concentrations vary, and this is not a verified mineral analysis of any particular ingredient batch. Trace amounts should not be confused with nutritionally significant quantities or evidence of absorption through the skin.

These differences influence characteristics such as crystal structure, solubility, moisture absorption and the way each ingredient behaves in a formulation.  They remind us that the term mineral bath salt describes a diverse family of ingredients, rather than one single substance.

Dr Kez Chirolab Why Have Mineral Salts Been Used in Bathing Traditions?

Why Have Mineral Salts Been Used in Bathing Traditions?

Across different cultures and historical periods, people have sought out mineral springs, salt lakes and naturally mineral-rich waters.

From Roman bathing traditions to the mineral spas of Europe, bathing has long been associated with cleansing, relaxation and taking time away from the demands of everyday life.

Warm water itself can make a bath feel comforting and restorative.  The addition of mineral salts introduces different compositions and sensory qualities to that experience.

Today, mineral bathing remains a familiar personal care ritual, whether it's an elaborate spa experience or simply a quiet moment in your own bathroom.

But why stop at mineral salts?

In developing Clean Slate, we've also explored other remarkable earth-derived and botanical ingredients, including bentonite clay, diatomaceous earth and colloidal oatmeal, each thoughtfully selected for its distinctive characteristics and contribution to the overall bathing experience.

Sometimes, understanding the extraordinary natural history behind an ingredient can make an ordinary moment feel even more special.  Because knowledge is empowering, and we believe that understanding what goes into your bath should be just as rewarding as enjoying it.

Dr Kez Chirolab Why Origin and Quality Matter

Why Origin and Quality Matter

When we choose ingredients, we don't believe the name on the label tells the whole story.  Two products described as the same type of mineral salt may differ in their source, processing, composition and quality specifications.  That's why we believe it's worth asking a few more questions.

Where did the ingredient originate?

How was it extracted or produced?

What is its actual mineral composition?

And has it been assessed for the purpose in which it will be used?

Where practical, we prefer to source ingredients locally. But our priorities also include quality, purity, appropriate processing and responsible sourcing.

We don't believe geography alone should determine whether an ingredient deserves a place in a formulation.

For us, thoughtful ingredient selection means understanding what we're choosing, why we're choosing it and the standards we expect it to meet.

Dr Kez Chirolab what we leave out matters too

What We Leave Out Matters, Too

Have you ever stopped to consider what's actually in your bathwater?

Many conventional bubble baths and bathing products contain a combination of synthetic fragrances, colourings, foaming agents and preservatives.  Some may cause irritation or sensitivity in certain individuals, particularly those with sensitive skin, and for the rest of us, do we really want to soak our bodies in those synthetic chemicals?

When you consider how many different personal care products we use throughout the day, we think it's worth asking whether every additional ingredient is really necessary.

That's why we take a thoughtful approach to formulation, choosing ingredients for their purpose rather than simply adding them for fragrance, colour or visual appeal.

We believe that what we leave out of our formulations deserves just as much consideration as what we put in.

Because a beautiful bathing experience doesn't have to come with a long list of unnecessary extras.
