So What Is An Infrared Sauna Anyway?
Let’s geek out for a sec. Infrared light is a form of invisible heat energy (no scary UV rays here, we promise). Unlike traditional saunas that just heat the air, infrared saunas use light to directly heat your body - gently, deeply, and effectively. The result? A delicious sweat that supports detoxification, muscle recovery, relaxation, and even skin health... all without turning you into a roasted potato.
Infrared light isn’t just surface-level stuff - it works at the cellular level, which is where the real magic happens. When infrared wavelengths penetrate your skin, they stimulate mitochondria (your cells’ energy factories) to produce more ATP - the fuel your body uses for healing, detox, repair and regeneration. Think of it like charging your body’s internal batteries.
Our saunas use a combo of near, mid, and far infrared wavelengths - aka a trio of wellness magic. Here's what each one does.
Each wavelength targets a different tissue depth:
- Near infrared (~880 nm) hits the outer layers, supporting skin health, collagen production and wound repair. Working on the skin’s surface, it’s great for cell renewal, wound healing and giving your complexion that post-sauna glow. (Penetrates ~5mm)
- Mid infrared (~3000-5000 nm) goes deeper, helping reduce inflammation, dilate blood vessels, improve circulation to injured tissues, ease muscle tension and help ease joint pain. Like a hot bowl of soup on a cold day, your insides feel all nourished and warm! (Penetrates ~1cm)
- Far infrared (~5500-10,000+ nm) dives into fat and muscle, raising your core body temperature to kickstart a deep, detoxifying sweat that releases toxins from where they’ve been quietly hiding…in your cells. Gets right into the detox zone, increasing circulation and promoting that deep, purifying sweat that makes you feel reborn. (Penetrates up to ~4-5cm)
It’s not just heat - it’s photobiomodulation (yep, that’s the real term) - using light to change the way your cells behave for the better. Science-y, sneaky-clever, and seriously effective.
And no, it doesn’t feel like a brain-melting oven (like a standard hot coal sauna) where the heat smacks you in the face when you open the door. Infrared heat is gentle and soothing. Think more ‘warm cocoon’ than ‘roast chook.’

The Health Benefits Of An Infrared Sauna? Oh, Just a Few...
Infrared saunas have many benefits in the wellness world. Here's what regular sessions can do for you:
- Detox the easy way: Sweat out the nasties without lifting a finger.
- Better sleep: Calm your nervous system and say goodbye to 2am overthinking.
- Muscle + joint relief: Great for post-gym, injury recovery or just stiff-from-sitting-all-day humans.
- Heart health boost: Improve circulation, blood flow and cardiovascular resilience.
- Weight management: Stimulates your cardio system and raises your heat rate…while sitting!
- Stress reduction: Switch on your parasympathetic system (aka rest & digest mode) and unwind.
- Glow-up: Increased collagen production, clearer skin and that sweaty sparkle only infrared can bring.
Infrared Sauna or Conventional Sauna? What’s the difference?
Not all sweat is created equal.
If you’ve ever felt like you were barely surviving inside a traditional sauna, you’re not alone. Conventional saunas rely on cranking up the ambient air temperature - usually between 80–100°C, making the room feel like a dry, slightly judgmental oven.
Infrared saunas? Totally different vibe.
Instead of just heating the air, infrared saunas use light to heat your body directly. That means you get the internal benefits like detox, deep muscle relief and boosted circulation at a much lower and more comfortable temperature (around 38–58°C).
In short? Infrared does more, with less effort. You get the benefits of a passive cardio workout, a deep detox and nervous system reset without feeling like you’ve been cooked alive.

Why Have Your Infrared Sauna At Life Balance Adjustments Chiro Clinic In Watsonia?
Let’s be honest - you can get a lot of gimmicky wellness gadgets and treatments these days, often from questionable sources. But this isn’t a glorified heat box in your mate's garage. We’re talking Sunlighten mPulse, the Rolls-Royce of infrared saunas. Clinically backed. Smart technology. Targeted therapy. And the best part? You don’t have to clean it or wash any towels - we already do the hard work for you. Just turn up!
Bonus: it pairs beautifully with a chiropractic adjustment! Chiro then infrared sauna is a perfect combo.
What To Expect And Bring To An Infrared Sauna Session
Our infrared sauna is a private experience - you’ll have the cabin all to yourself (unless you bring a friend!) in a private room. Sessions run for approximately 30 - 45 minutes, depending on your preference and you’re in control of the heat (if you're not doing a pre-set program) and light settings.
We provide a towel for you, so we suggest you bring:
- A water bottle (or two if you drink a lot)
- Bathers, if you’re choosing to wear them as your sauna gear
- A change of clothes and undies (in case they get sweaty if you're wearing them in the sauna)
- Your best ‘me time’ energy
Does the Infrared Sauna have preset programs?
Yes! As much as you can get in and just press ’play’, if you have a specific health goal, there are some great options to help get you to where you want to be.
The saunas contain a set of preset health programs that have been researched and created to provide the optimal benefits to reach your goal of your sauna session. They automatically determine the mid, near and far infrared options as well as optimal temperature range, specific to each program.

How Many people fit into an infrared sauna?
Our infrared saunas are three-person saunas. You can comfortably fit 2 people in without the feeling of bumping into each other’s personal space. Three people fit in if you don't mind getting up close and personal in an elbow-touching kinda way.
If you would like to bring a friend or 2, when booking, just make a note at the time of booking letting us know you are bringing extras so we can have the sauna set up for you all. The fee for bringing a friend is $20 extra per person and can be paid on the day.
How long is an Infrared Sauna Session?
Most sessions go for 30 to 45 minutes. Long enough to work up a good sweat, short enough to fit between school pickup and that overdue chiropractor appointment. Allow for an hour, by the time you get your gear off and back on again.
Noteworthy tip... it's hard to get dressed fast when you're all sweaty! Clothes kinda stick to you if you know what we mean hehe
What Should I Wear In An Infrared Sauna?
Keep it comfy and minimal - bathers, a towel, light tank top and shorts or even just your undies (it’s a private room!). Whatever you are comfy in. Just remember to hydrate before and after. Your body will thank you. (And bring a spare change of clothes/undies in case yours get all sweaty!)
What’s The Ideal Temperature Of An Infrared Sauna?
The sweet spot is between 38°C and 58°C. That’s where the therapeutic magic of infrared does its thing. Crank it too high (above 58°C) and you're not absorbing infrared - you’re just in a hot box pretending to be productive.
Infrared sauna therapy isn’t about maxing out the temp, it’s about precision, not punishment. Our saunas are 95–99% emissive, meaning nearly all of the energy goes directly into your body, not into the air. It's smart heat, not brute heat.
Note: The saunas do go to a higher temp if you want to have it hotter.
Does An Infrared Sauna Make Me Sweat That much?
Let’s just say: you’ll need that towel! This is a deep, detoxifying sweat, not a glisten. You'll likely feel refreshed, lighter, and have more of a spring in your step. But it may not be a complete sweat fest on the first session and that’s completely normal, you’ll need to read the next section to find out why…
Your Body Gets Better at Sweating Over Time
Usually, it takes few sessions for your body (and your cells) to fully adjust to infrared sauna therapy. Here's why:
When you first start using an infrared sauna, your body might not sweat a lot right away - especially if you’re someone who doesn’t normally sweat much. This is completely normal. Here's what happens:
- Initial sessions are more about cellular activation: Your body is learning to respond to infrared light, ramping up mitochondrial activity and circulation.
- As your core temperature rises more efficiently, your body begins to adapt by increasing sweat production and blood flow.
- Your detox pathways become more responsive, meaning the skin, lymph, and circulatory system start working more efficiently with repeated use.
- Over time, you’ll start to sweat sooner, more deeply, and more effectively, which is a good sign your system is adjusting and detoxing better.
What to Expect
- Session 1-3: You may sweat lightly or later in the session. You’ll feel relaxed, but may not feel like you’ve “detoxed” just yet.
- Session 4-6: Your body starts to respond faster. Sweat starts earlier, and you may notice clearer skin, deeper sleep and improved mood.
- Session 7+: Full benefits kick in; your body recognises the heat and gets to work right away. It becomes easier to enter that deep-sweat, parasympathetic ‘rest and repair’ state.
Bottom line? Yes - infrared sauna therapy is cumulative. The more consistently you use it, the more your body adapts, and the more powerful your sessions become so make it part of your weekly wellness routine!

Does your infrared sauna have chromotherapy (colour light therapy)?
Absolutely. Our dimmable halo lighting includes optional chromotherapy - a colour-based healing system to help balance your energy and boost mood.

Infrared Sauna = Heat for You, Not Your Stuff
One of the most common questions we get is “Can I take my phone into an infrared sauna?”
Unlike traditional saunas that heat the air (and everything in it), infrared saunas use light to heat your body directly. That means your cells absorb the heat - not your phone, towel or water bottle. The ambient air temperature stays much lower, so your belongings typically won’t overheat, fog up or melt into oblivion.
But…for the safety of electronics (and just in case you really love your phone), we still say:
“Bring your phone in at your own risk.” It likely won’t get hot - but it will get sweaty an possibly a little laggy. If in doubt, toss it out the sauna door or leave it out entirely for some much needed ‘unplugged’ and uninterrupted screen time. Do Not Disturb mode activated.
As we are truly looking out for your health, let's briefly talk about plastic water bottles…Can I take a plastic water bottle into an Infrared sauna or will the heat make it more toxic?
The Short Answer: Yes it can make it more toxic as heat can increase the risk of plastic leaching chemicals like BPA or phthalates into your water. However, infrared saunas produce significantly lower ambient temperatures than traditional saunas, so the risk is much lower - but not zero.
The Science-y Context: Infrared saunas typically operate between 38°C and 58°C, targeting your body directly rather than heating the surrounding air intensely. Leaching from plastic is most concerning at higher temperatures - especially above 60°C-70°C or when plastic is directly heated (e.g. left in a hot car, boiled or microwaved).
While the air inside an infrared sauna is unlikely to hit those danger zones, your water bottle may still be warmed indirectly over time, depending on placement and material.
What we recommend: To stay on the safe side, and keep the experience truly low-tox, it’s smart to avoid plastic bottles in any kind of heat-based environment (we much prefer to say in any environment but know its not always practical), including infrared saunas.
If possible, opt for a stainless steel (think Frank Green or Owala style) bottle. Trust us, they’re worth it and the water stays nice and cold too! It’s always best to play it safe, especially when you’re here to detox, not retox.
Can I Combine Infrared Sauna With Other Treatments?
Yes! It’s the perfect post-adjustment add-on. Infrared sauna loosens the muscles, calms the nervous system and consolidates your chiro adjustment, your body is ready for deeper healing work in the sauna. Book your chiro adjustment with Dr Kez, pop in for a rejuvenating sauna sesh and walk out feeling fab!
Is It Clean And Safe?
Absolutely. We clean and sanitise after every session, and infrared light itself naturally inhibits bacteria growth. The saunas are eco-friendly, crafted from sustainably sourced, non-toxic 100% hardwood eucalyptus and hypoallergenic basswood, with antibacterial bamboo carbon backrests for clean, breathable comfort.
An added bonus is the exclusive Magne-Seal™ technology which uses magnetic locking (no glue or screws) for assembly, making the sauna super sturdy while allowing the wood to breathe and flex over time. Clean design, no chemical exposure to toxic glues.
No germy steam here or sitting in someone else’s sweat, just pure, dry heat and peace of mind.
Low EMF = Peace of Mind
Yes, we are conscious of this too. When exploring what infrared saunas to provide in our clinic, we did a LOT of research.
One of the most common concerns with high-tech wellness tools is EMF (electromagnetic field) exposure. That’s why we chose Sunlighten saunas, which are designed with ultra-low EMF and ELF (extremely low frequency) emissions - and we liked that they’ve got the independent test results to prove it.
Average EMF reading across all Sunlighten saunas? Just 0.5 milligauss (mG).
To put that into perspective, check this out:

Independent testing was conducted by Vitatech Electromagnetics, one of the most respected EMF testing companies globally. According to Vitatech, anything under 10.0 mG is considered “extremely low.”
Many companies claim "low EMF," but can’t produce heater-specific test data - especially on full-spectrum panels. Sunlighten can. Always ask for proof if you are considering purchasing your own infrared sauna.

Got more questions? Let’s answer some more about why the infrared saunas at our chiropractic clinic in Watsonia (Victoria) are a cut above!
Q: Is there a difference between Solocarbon® and other infrared heaters?
A: Yep. Sunlight uses Solocarbon®, which is patented, tested, and proven. It delivers higher infrared output and absorbs safely into your skin. Most other brands can’t say that.
Q: Can I bring my phone in to an infrared sauna?
A: You can BUT at your own risk. (And be prepared for it to possibly get a little sweaty!)
Q: Is an infrared sauna safe for kids, elderly or pregnant people?
A. Generally, yes, but with modified sessions and medical guidance. We recommend shorter, cooler sessions for kids and seniors and checking with your practitioner if you’re pregnant or managing a health condition.
Q: Are Infrared Saunas Clinically Backed
A. Yes, by NASA! Sunlighten’s near infrared (NIR) tech is patented and co-developed with NASA, delivering a precise wavelength (880nm) for cell regeneration, skin repair, and wound healing. Not just “infrared” - the right kind, at the right strength.
Q. What is the Emissivity of an Infrared Sauna?
A. 99% Emissivity = Maximum Results! Infrared therapy is only as good as the emissivity of the panels. Sunlighten infrared sauna panels emit 95–99% pure infrared, which means more light is absorbed by your body (and not lost in the air). Translation: you get more benefits in less time
Q. Does the Infrared Sauna Have Pre-Programmed Wellness Modes?
A. Absolutely! Making your life choices easier, you can choose from six clinical-grade preset programs, each designed for a specific goal:
- Detoxification
- Relaxation
- Pain Relief
- Cardiovascular Health
- Weight Loss
- Anti-Ageing
Each program automatically adjusts the blend and intensity of near, mid and far infrared waves to target your goal safely and effectively.
Q. Can I lose weight in an Infrared sauna?
A. Passive Cardio + Sweat-Driven Weight Loss is definitely an added benefit! Infrared sessions create a passive cardiovascular workout by elevating heart rate and metabolism - all while you're sitting still. Burn calories, support fat metabolism and reduce water retention. And yes, it’s backed by clinical research.
Q. Do athletes use infrared saunas for performance?
A. 100% absolutely they do! Used by pros & wellness gurus, Infrared saunas help athletes recover faster, train harder, and perform better - naturally. The deep heat boosts circulation, reduces inflammation, and supports detox at the cellular level. It can be used pre or post game for mental focus, stress regulation, delivering more oxygen and nutrients to muscles, speeding up the removal of lactic acid and metabolic waste, enhancing endurance, reducing fatigue, muscle recovery and growth hormone response. It’s like a passive cardio session plus muscle recovery and mental reset—all in one. Less soreness, better sleep, more gains.
A slightly deeper dive - Geek Mode: Activated - What Is An Infrared Sauna
Here’s what infrared does at the cellular level (for those who love a bit of biohacking).
Infrared light therapy is a form of photobiomodulation—a fancy term that means “light influencing biology.” It works by delivering specific wavelengths of light deep into the body, where it interacts directly with our mitochondria—the energy-producing powerhouses inside almost every cell.
Let’s break it down:
ATP: Your Body’s Cellular Fuel: Infrared light (especially in the near-infrared range) stimulates an enzyme called cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria. This revs up production of adenosine triphosphate (ATP)—your cells’ go-go juice. More ATP = more energy for repair, regeneration, and detoxification. It’s like giving your cells a Red Bull…minus the sugar crash.
Detox at Depth: Far infrared (FIR) reaches the body’s deepest layers, including fat cells and connective tissues - where nasties like heavy metals, petrochemicals, and other toxins tend to bunker down. FIR raises your core body temperature, stimulating your sweat glands from the inside out. This results in a cellular-level sweat that’s richer in toxins and metabolic waste compared to regular surface sweat (like the kind from a jog or traditional sauna).
Improved Blood Flow = Healing Highway: Mid infrared (MIR) expands blood vessels and enhances microcirculation. This helps oxygen, nutrients, and immune cells get where they’re needed faster - whether you’re healing a sore muscle, fighting inflammation or just trying to feel more like a human.
Reduced Inflammation + Immune Boost: Infrared therapy also modulates inflammatory markers like cytokines and supports white blood cell activity. In plain speak? It lowers inflammation, boosts immunity, and gives your body the tools it needs to restore balance, naturally.
Infrared doesn’t just heat you up - it’s light therapy that works on your mitochondrial mojo, detox pathways, circulatory system, and immune response. Now that’s a hot topic worth sweating over.
