Kunzea Pain Relief Cream | Kunzea Essential oil

Kunzea essential oil is a remarkable and relatively new essential oil, derived from an Australian native small plant, Kunzea ambigua, which is predominantly found in New South Wales, Victoria and North East Tasmania.  Other common names for the Kunzea ambigua plant include; White Cloud, Tasmanian Kunzea and Tick Bush, with the latter name coming about when farmers noticed animals seeking refuge under the Kunzea ambigua branches, as it provided them protection from ticks and mites.  

Kunzea is a genus of plants in the family Myrtaceae or the myrtle family, including more commonly known plants like; eucalyptus, tea tree, lemon myrtle, clove and allspice.  Kunzea has a clean, fresh, invigorating undertone that is often compared to the Australian bush, transporting you instantly to a feeling of being in the fresh air of nature.  In comparison to the other species of the Myrtacea family, such as tea tree, Kunzea has two very important distinguishing features that make it stand out high above the rest, namely:

1️⃣  A higher percentage of active, medicinal compound (globulol, viridiflorol, spathulenol, ledol and bicyclogermacrene), making it significantly more therapeutically active; and

2️⃣   A lower concentration of irritant, making it safer to apply topically to the skin

Although the taxonomy of the genus is not yet settled, due to a number of hybrids being in existence, the fact still remains that the invigorating undertones of the Kunzea ambigua plant, with the inclusion of it’s unique alpha pinene compound and the 1,8 cineole molecules brings with it some extremely powerful therapeutic properties, such as:

Who discovered the Kunzea secret?

The story behind the discovery of Kunzea within itself is quite remarkable.  An observant and entrepreneurial Tasmanian farmer, John Hood, noticed that a section of his 35 year old fence surrounding his farm was rust-free, whereas the remainder of the fence became rusty and run down.  Upon further investigation, he noticed that a particular type of tree grew over this undamaged portion of the fence, but was not present around the remainder of the perimeter of his farm, where the fence had noticeably deteriorated.  

Farmer John Hood, began harvesting the Kunzea ambigua plant to test its potential benefits in woodworking, of all things 🤦‍♀️ . During the distillation process, John spilled some of the pure essential oil onto his hand, which he later, inadvertently, rubbed his nose.  Suddenly John noticed a significant improvement with his ability to breathe.  Given the issues that John had with his sinuses as the result of working in a gold refinery, he felt this was a significant discovery.  

Further research ensued into the clean, fresh, invigorating Kunzea essential oil and its potential therapeutic benefits, eventually resulting in the Therapeutic Goods Administration approving Kunzea oil as a medicine for external use.  The oil is now used topically for arthritis and the relief of rheumatoid pain, for bruising and wound healing, including assistance with healing psoriasis and eczema, as well as bites and stings (hence the alternative name Tick Bush 😉 ).  There have been some great scientific studies that are showing great promise as an antibacterial agent, even against antibiotic resistant bacteria like golden staph.
